Bespoke doormats for luxury Westminster development

ESE Direct were delighted to be approached by Multiplex back in November 2019 to provide entrance mats for the construction phase of a major high-end redevelopment.

Global construction company, Multiplex, were awarded the £420m contract to develop the site of the former Metropolitan Police Headquarters at New Scotland Yard in Westminster.

The development would consist of six new mixed-use buildings, each between 13 and 19 storeys high, on a 1.72 acre site and containing 268 luxury apartments. As well as a gym, 25-metre swimming pool and premium spa facility, the development also includes 25,000 sq. ft. of prime retail units and commercial space.

Throughout the construction phase of a project like this, 'sticky step' plastic mats are often used. These are mats with peel-off layers which remove dirt and dust from shoes and equipment as construction workers move in and out of the buildings.

In this instance, the client was looking for something more sustainable. The team at ESE Direct carried out a number of site visits to discuss the client’s specific design requirements and it quickly became obvious that a bespoke solution would be required. As well as cutting down on waste, the client wanted each mat to be individually printed to signpost the building, floor and section being accessed at that particular entrance.

Samples were produced and demonstrated to the client which showed a mock-up of the unique print required. The nitrile-backed borderless floor mat sample was manufactured to a custom size of 1200 x 1200mm. After a successful evaluation, a quote was provided to the flooring contractors who were tendering for the work.

Loughton Contracts were awarded the order and sent instructions to ESE Direct to produce and deliver the 252 individually printed mats. Deliveries were phased to meet the customer’s specific requirements and completed in early 2021 to a satisfied customer.
