Homemade compost is invaluable in the garden and made easy with these Blackwall composters
Ask any keen gardener and they will tell you how invaluable organic compost really is. Not only does it improve your soil it also provides a home for wildlife, anything from bumblebee to hedgehogs, and of course the worms! Worms play an important role in composting, they shred the material inside your compost bin which helps other organisms form, they help eliminate disease and their movement/burrowing through the material aerates the compost.
To make really good compost you need a good mix of both nitrogen rich and carbon rich materials. Nitrogen rich waste comes from lush, green material such as grass cuttings, annual weeds, tea bags, fruit and vegetable peelings. And carbon rich waste comes from prunings, hedge trimmings, newspaper or paper (loosely scrunched) cardboard, straw and paper towels. You can also add eggshells and natural fibres but should never add raw meat, dairy products, perennial weeds, autumn leaves or pet faeces.
Your compost will occasionally need mixing with a garden fork to help with aeration. Decomposition happens because of microbes and they need to be able to breathe along with being moist, moisture aids the warmth of your compost so never let your pile dry out but alternatively you don’t want it to be too wet - you need the perfect balance. Shredding your material prior to putting it in your bin will help speed up decomposition process but you can expect to wait 12/24 months before your compost will be ready to use.
This bin arrives ready to use, you can plonk it straight onto a grassed area to encourage the worms in (or wherever you like) It's made from UV stabilised, recycled plastic and has a 200 litre capacity perfect for small gardens. There is a large hatch at the bottom to retrieve your compact when ready. If you're an avid gardener then you probably own a water butt. You'll know the effort it can take going backwards and forwards emptying your watering can, especially if you have a large garden. Why not let a water butt pump do the job for you? Happy gardening.
